Richard Pike is a London-based Australian composer & multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as singer and producer of Sydney pioneers PVT (aka Pivot) and ambient/experimental project DEEP LEARNING.
Richard is founder of Salmon Universe, a tape label with a focus on ambient and electronic music.
As screen composer he has scored Stan TV and BBC Three's ROMPER STOMPER - the update of the iconic Australian 1992 film that launched the career of Russell Crowe. Richard has scored the 10 episode series LES NORTON for the ABC, starring Rebel Wilson and David Wenham (2019). His latest score is an all analog synth exploration, with a hip-hop undercurrent for Channel 7's AUSTRALIAN GANGSTER (due for broadcast 2020).
Richard was nominated for Best Original Score in a Television Series at the 2018 AACTA Awards for Romper Stomper.
Richard says: "Romper Stomper was a joy to continue the sonic signature of the original cult movie, of which I was already a big fan. Scoring for Sydney Symphony players alongide synths and junk percussion was the basic template."
The score for ROMPER STOMPER was described by Australia’s ABC Classic FM’s Jason Di Rosso as “the most original score I've heard in a while” and “bombastic, a little absurd and, suitably, very menacing”.
And FBI Radio Sydney: "Pike’s excellent soundtrack is a mixture of orchestral cues, burbling synths, live drums and snarling electronics, not far at all from the soundtrack stuff Ben Frost has been doing of late…. I highly recommend giving this a listen."
Richard studied composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, exploring orchestral music and 20th century avant garde. His band PVT were the first Australians signed to legendary label Warp Records UK. Richard has produced 5 albums with PVT including the venerated 'O Soundtrack My Heart' (2009) and the debut 'Make Me Love You' (2005), which was nominated for Triple J's inaugural J Awards. He has toured the world supporting the likes of Sigur Ros, Gary Numan, Arctic Monkeys, Gotye & Warpaint.
PVT was invited to the Brian Eno-curated inaugural Luminious festival at the Sydney Opera House. They were also asked to support Yellow Magic Orchestra for Southbank's Meltdown festival.
He has also created sound for installations with London innovators United Visual Artists, producing work for Hyundai, Nike and more. He recently sound designed the piece 'Limen', creating vibrations through pools of water, for boutique perfume-maker Jo Malone.
